History of outNbout
outNbout has been a figment of our imagination
for quite sometime. Over the past 30 years we have been building
a collection of photographic images ranging from landscapes, abstracts,
fauna, flora and now macro imagery. Not having the marketing force
to manage this massive collection we were satisfied just creating
the photographic art, all the while knowing that someday we would
get-around-to sharing these creations with others. One of the greatest
stumbling blocks was the art community rarely recognized photography
as legitimate art in large part owing to a perceived lack of archival
properties yielding short lifespan characteristics of photographic
materials.
It was our dream to be able to one day effectively sell our photographic
creations as lasting art. The only technology that was accepted
by the art community was dye transfer which was a craft that we
apprenticed in but found to be a "dying" art when the
first commercial drum scanners were introduced.
We dabbled with marketing our images through stock agencies and
found we were unable to achieve our ultimate goal of distributing
our work as art to individuals looking for decor for their homes
or offices. We were not always interested in selling our original
materials, preferring to produce open or limited editions.
We were early adopters of Photographic Digital Imaging commencing
in the late '80's while owning/operating a commercial photographic
lab. During the transition from "film" to "digital"
we were instrumental in working with other digital pioneers in establishing
color mangement standards to ensure that quality of the digital
images were on par with commercially produced photographic prints.
Over the past 15 years digital photographic technology has moved
forward in leaps and bounds permitting digital imagery to match
or exceed traditional photographic prints. The major obstacle to
overcome was the archival qualities of digital media. Over the past
few years we have been testing and monitoring a number of ink and
paper suppliers who have been continually striving for excellence
in their respective product lines.
In the early 90's we fell in love with the art of producing photographic
images as Giclée prints, which was a very expensive commercial
process originally produced on the IRIS printer. Again, another
roadblock to achieving our goal to provide photography as art. However,
over the past couple of years we have found that the technologies
were coming together in ways we can realize our vision of producing
digital photographic art.
Now that we had the technical aspects in place we began the arduous
task of marketing our collection to everyone. Thanks to the internet
we are able to present to you our images.
Once we started to talk about the "outNbout" project we
found that were others who were in a similar situation. At this
point we decided to invite select artists and photographers to outNbout
and include their creations as part of our collection.
Where does the name outNbout come from??
Born and raised north of the 49th parallel
(Canada) and now living in the USA, we continually put smiles on
faces around us when we say out and about
(and a few other phrases). While it is a common expression to say
we are going out and about when going on a photo-shoot,
it somehow gets shortened to out-n-about. As a result
many of our photographic stories and photo descriptions usually
start with one day while we were out and about...
